Visual Controls

Visual controls are simple signals that provide an immediate understanding to everyone of what needs to be done. A work place that uses visual controls can reduce the chance for miscommunication among employees and supervisors alike. The key is to keep it simple, standardized and effective. This course is typically a half-day in duration and is often combined with other course offerings.

Visual Controls Course Outline

1. Helper/leader project report out - "What's in it for me?" and set event goals

2. Review 5S - Sort, Straighten, Sweep, Standardize, & Sustain

3. Purpose of Visual Controls

4. Define the use of visual controls to identify waste and improve the process

5. Use visual controls to make problems obvious

  • Quality
  • Inventory / kanban
  • Productivity (day by hour board)
  • Storage areas
  • Standardize work documents
  • Floor / aisles

6. Select an area to apply visual controls

7. Begin visual control project on selected area

8. Student teach back - Review key learning elements & understanding

9. Report out to management / organization

10. Post Visual Controls project results in a public area
